Fanning Howey Hires Nicholas Kothari to Elevate Design Leadership in Michigan

By Zachary Sprunger

Ferndale, Michigan, January 8, 2026 – Fanning Howey, an architecture, interiors and engineering firm specializing in learning environments, is excited to announce the hiring of Nicholas (Nick) Kothari, AIA, NCARB, LEED GA, as a Design Architect focused on advancing our work in Michigan’s K-12 education and Sports & Recreation markets.

With more than 20 years of global experience, Kothari brings a unique blend of architectural excellence, interior innovation, and visionary leadership to the firm. He has led transformative design efforts for clients ranging from Michigan K-12 schools and universities to international brands and institutions across Shanghai, Dubai, and New York.

“Nick’s diverse background and award-winning design portfolio will deepen our impact in Michigan and further energize our creative process,” said Salvatore Moschelli, AIA, NOMA, Project Executive at Fanning Howey. “He’s a strategic thinker and an inspiring designer who will help us create more meaningful spaces for students, athletes, and communities.”

Kothari’s experience includes high-profile projects such as the STEM Research and Learning Facility at Michigan State University, Romeo High School, George Turek Hall of Science at Catholic Central and the MADE Maker Academy in Utica. His earlier work in global markets includes hospitality, retail, and cultural landmarks, giving him a powerful lens for designing environments that are both functional and inspiring.

His transformative K-12 work can be seen across the tri-county area and beyond such as Romulus, South Lyon, Clio, Pinckney, Utica, Romeo, and his birth town, Pontiac. In addition to being a talented architect and designer, Nick’s past work as an educator gives him a unique insight into the impact of learning environments on student outcomes.

At Fanning Howey, Kothari will collaborate with design teams across the state to lead K-12 projects from visioning to execution and to expand the reach of the firm’s recently launched Sports & Recreation Design Studio.

“I’m thrilled to join Fanning Howey at a time of growth and creative momentum,” said Kothari. “Designing for education and recreation isn’t just about spaces—it’s about shaping the future of our communities. I look forward to contributing to that mission in a meaningful way.”

Kothari holds a Master of Architecture from Columbia University and a Bachelor of Science in Architectural Design from Lawrence Technological University. He is based in Fanning Howey’s Ferndale, Michigan, office.
