Mechanical Designer
At Fanning Howey, we are a collaborative architecture and engineering firm dedicated to creating environments that empower communities. We are seeking a skilled and driven Mechanical Designer to join our multidisciplinary team and contribute to innovative, sustainable building designs across a diverse range of project types. In this role, you will play a key part in delivering high-performance HVAC and plumbing design solutions that align with client goals, architectural vision, and building code requirements. You will contribute to innovative and sustainable projects from concept through construction, while collaborating across disciplines to ensure quality and integration.
Key Responsibilities:
Design & Technical Execution:
- Develop HVAC, plumbing, and mechanical systems Revit and AutoCAD.
- Perform load calculations, system sizing, and equipment selection to maximize efficiency and occupant comfort.
- Integrate systems with Building Automation Systems (BAS) into mechanical designs.
- Research and apply relevant codes and standards (ASHRAE, IBC, IMC, etc.).
- Coordinate with architects, structural and civil engineers, and other consultants to deliver cohesive, interdisciplinary design solutions.
- Participate in design reviews and coordination meetings to ensure system compatibility and design intent.
- Apply lifecycle thinking to optimize system performance throughout design, construction, and operation.
Collaboration & Coordination:
- Work closely with architects, engineers, and consultants to achieve integrated designs.
- Participate in BIM coordination and clash detection workflows.
- Prepare accurate, coordinated construction documents.
- Conduct site visits to observe construction progress and resolve design issues
- Support construction administration and respond to RFIs
- Promote sustainable design practices and LEED initiatives
Qualifications:
Required:
- Associate’s Degree, Technical, Trade School, or Bachelor’s degree in Mechanical Engineering, Engineering Technology, or related field
Preferred Qualifications:
- 4–10+ years of mechanical design experience in an A/E or consulting environment
- Familiarity with BAS and mechanical systems integration
- Plumbing design experience is a plus
- Strong understanding of ASHRAE standards and applicable codes
